Discover how we helped Steve start a new chapter in his own specially adapted home.
Steve is a young man with autism and pathological demand avoidance (PDA). He joined our service at the age of 18 after spending some time in a local treatment unit. Transitions are very difficult for Steve, so simply moving into his first supported living placement was a huge achievement.
Although Steve initially settled well, it soon became clear that a shared house was not the right environment for him. His needs were greater than the property could accommodate, and this began to affect both Steve's wellbeing and his ability to thrive. It was clear that Steve required his own space in a home designed specifically around his needs.
Working closely with Steve, his family, his care provider, and commissioners, we identified a bungalow that could be adapted to suit him. Together with one of our investors, we completely renovated the property to make it safe, comfortable, and welcoming.
So Steve no longer had to share bathroom facilities.
For him to relax and enjoy his interests.
With dimmer switches, blackout blinds, and calm lighting.
Which is especially important to Steve.
Such as wall padding and improved ventilation measures.
Because moving is especially challenging for Steve, we worked closely with him to make the process as smooth as possible. We created visual guides and video tours of his new home and spent time visiting him in his previous placement to prepare him step by step.
On moving day, Steve transitioned to his new home without any difficulties—the first time he had left his bedroom in almost 18 months. Since moving, he has started to engage in everyday activities again. He has brushed his teeth, taken a bath, and begun interacting more positively with his support staff. These small steps represent enormous progress for Steve and demonstrate how the right environment can unlock new opportunities.

Steve's story shows how housing can transform lives. With the right property, the right adaptations, and the right support, young adults with complex needs can make real and meaningful progress.
