1Before

RE, a 49-year-old gentleman with autism and Pica, faced an uncertain future when the residential care home he had lived in received an Inadequate rating and was closed down. Along with other residents, he was given just six months to find alternative accommodation. RE is non-verbal and requires 24-hour two-to-one support, so it was essential to find a property that was safe, comfortable, and located close to local amenities.

2How Vert Housing Helped

Vert Housing was approached to secure a suitable property and manage the entire process. We identified a two-bedroom bungalow in Loughborough as an ideal location, but the house needed significant work to meet RE's needs. Working closely with the investor, we project-managed the full refurbishment:

Flooring & Decoration

Installed new, easy-clean flooring throughout and redecorated the property.

Safety & Compliance

Fitted autism-friendly lighting and ensured full fire compliance with hard-wired smoke detectors, emergency lighting, and fire doors.

Water Safety

Added thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs) to all water outlets and a Sure Stop water shut-off button for extra safety.

Garden Adaptation

Adapted the rear garden by removing gravel (a risk due to RE's Pica) and replacing it with fresh turf.

Bathroom Renovation

Refurbished the shower room, removing the shower and installing a bath to suit RE's preferences.

Personalised Design

Worked with RE's family to design a bedroom that was both homely and functional, with specialist furniture and a dedicated office area for ASD Support staff.

3After

The result was a safe, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed home tailored to RE's unique needs. He has now successfully settled into his bungalow, enjoying both his home and his new routines. His family expressed how seamless the process felt, praising the partnership between Vert Housing and ASD Support, and highlighting how stress-free the move was made to feel.

Outcome

Stable housing that fully meets RE's needs.

Improved wellbeing and comfort in a safe environment.

A smooth transition supported by collaboration between family, housing, and care provider.

A strong foundation for RE to thrive in his new home.
